Workshops & Projects

I have always been really passionate about Art as therapy, which led me to work with all kinds of different people and on mental health wards and hospitals around London. I was lucky enough to work with and learn from an amazing Art Therapist, which led me to being accepted to study at Goldsmiths to do an MA in Art Psychotherapy…….but I wasn`t quite ready to be a therapist, so I moved to Sydney to spend one blissful year making Art in the sun!

As a result of all my experience of working with many different groups of people; my community work as an Artist is really important to my practice and in September 2017 I was very happy to qualify as an Integrative Psychotherapist.

I have over ten years of experience of working as a freelance Artist, some of the projects I have developed and facilitated are; Banardos group , Start Arts on Prescription workshops in Salford , New Ghosts Project, East Lancashire Arts on Prescription projects in Clitheroe and Burnley, Tipp project with young mums in Salford, Open shop Project at Haworth Gallery and The Talking Tower exhibition.

Project: Happiness…Bolton Museums` Collections..

I was so excited to pick up items from Bolton Museums` wonderful natural history collection; the group at Inspire will be so excited to see and touch the items….Ruby was very excited about one item too! ( the tarantula-me not so much!)

I`m really interested to see which objects group members are drawn to and why. We are going to be using these objects to create different patterns.

A Buzzard`s wing…so beautiful

A Cone shell, which has to be my favourite…the pattern is so beautiful

And a Tarantula, which is encased in acrylic luckily for me!

Project: Happiness….Reflecting back and looking forward..

I had been informed about a sports day that would take a lot of the participants away from the group, but to avoid people turning up and me not being there, we decided to still go ahead. I was secretly looking forward to a quieter group!

Three group members turned up; the atmosphere felt very calm….we began by doing another writing exercise, which we all did together, then we did doodle exercises with these words, which brought up unexpected things. Small groups always feel very different to larger ones; there is more space for people to talk and usually people feel more comfortable sharing in a more intimate group. I felt priviledged to be part of it; the sharing that happened felt really important. Experiences were shared and common ground was found, which led us to talking about feelings of shame. I have no experience of addiction, but talking about what to me is a core human feeling, has increased my understanding, so I feel I have greater empathy for an addict`s experience, so thank you!

It`s impossible to pinpoint exactly what brought about this sharing; lots of factors no doubt, but maybe writing feelings down as a small group was one of these factors. One group member said. “I have never felt this open in a group before; they`re always trying to get you to open up about how you feel.”

There was a hopeful feeling to the group, as they reflected on past events that brought them to this point, whilst looking to the future.

Project: Happiness…. Stop….Start…

Last week felt really powerful; participants were really focused on their artwork, so maybe I was expecting a similar experience this week!

The atmosphere felt completely different; the group was really busy, people turned up at different times, which meant I had to keep repeating what was happening, so there was a stop start feel to the group.Adding to this there was a lot of new group members who had not been before, so that meant explaining what the project was about.

This left me feeling frazzled! I`m sure this had an impact on the group members who were settled from the start. This made me think do I need to limit this kind of disruption? The group has a start and end time and this session made me wonder how much I should be keeping this boundary?

The ideal group situation where everyone comes on time every week just does not exist, so is it about limiting these disruptions or accepting them!? One of the things I love about creativity is you can socialise, whilst creating; you don`t need to go any deeper and the therapeutic value of creativity can still be at work.

We began the group with a very thoughtful writing exercise, (which in hindsight would have been better at the end!), this was to generate ideas and themes for their mantras. Group members who had experienced the ink and bleach moved on to explore working with other inks, acrylics and masking fluid, whilst new group members tried out the bleach. Beautiful things happened….

Project: Happiness….Go with the flow

I asked participants how they felt about some ‘free’ time, once we had completed some activities and they liked the idea- but of course we didn`t need it!

When you plan for things I find that is often the case! I wonder if this is because we can`t predict our own process let alone the processes of others! You have to be in the moment with the process. Maybe the power of creativity comes when we let go of trying to control it…..however I like the ‘free’ time idea and it may come in useful at some point.

We started warming up with some doodling taking inspiration from Bolton Museums` beautiful collections….group members were itching to get started. It seems really important I follow their pace as best I can.

I wanted each group member to begin to create a background for their mantra; my plan is to turn these into postcards and use them to promote the project. Each group member was given some ink and bleach and we looked at this image from Bolton Museum and we were off…

The rest of the session was spent playing with the materials…there were shouts of delight as the inks and bleach surprised them! One group member spent the whole session layering one picture, whilst others made a few pictures trying different things each time and then going back to an image to rework it. Group members said the process was “therapeutic”, “go with the flow”, “I love it”, “feels free”, “hypnotic”….I could feel the energy in the room and the power of creativity at work….I am wondering what it was about the inks and bleach that felt so satisfying? Perhaps the balance of control, but not too much control was right for this group and allowed them to let go of what looks ‘wrong’ or ‘right’ and enjoy playing and experimenting.

I`m hoping we have more sessions like this one! And as we explore and experiment more I hope we can express more and more about our creative process.

Project: Happiness…Go with the process

The second workshop at Inspire felt a lot more busy, group members seemed relaxed at what would occur and eager to begin. We warmed up by doing an exercise inspired by Violet Oaklander (she`s amazing)! I warned the group members this exercise was just for them and they didn`t need to share it with anyone- I set the timer to take some of the pressure off. All group members had a go and I felt admiration for their willingness to try something new.

We looked at some botanical images from Bolton Museum to inspire us..

Each member appeared to have a very different pace and style of working; some preferring to plan it out carefully, some not quite knowing where to start, whilst some wanting to dive in there and just get going. Reflecting now there seemed to be more energy at the start of the group and then the atmosphere appeared to calm down, perhaps as people veered off more in their own directions.

Reflecting I think I gave too many instructions that perhaps may have interfered with participant`s process of …..We seemed to hit a difficult point in the middle of the session, but once that had passed beautiful things began to emerge. Lots of things to reflect on for the next workshop. I think perhaps my anxiety about creating an enjoyable experience, over shadowed my ability to let go and follow the group members process. I might see how the group feel about some time in the group free from instruction; where they can just use the materials to do exactly what they want.
